Features include a kennel attendant area and an education room. Because the shelter's goal is to control the population of unwanted animals in the county, all animals adopted from the shelter must be spayed or neutered. The spaying or neutering fee includes the adoption fee. Visitors must pay a fee of $75.00-$100.00 to spay or neuter a dog six months old or older. Male puppies cost $75.00 to neuter and female puppies cost $100.00 to spay. Male cats are $40.00 and female cats are $65.00. Rabies control, administered through the Onslow County Health Department Animal Control, is another priority area at the county shelter. Animal control officers also investigate animal cruelty and abandonment, puppy mills, dog fighting, cock fighting and horse cruelty. In addition, the officers handle loose, stray or barking dogs, and incidents of bites that are reported to the hospital.
