Carlisle Barracks is a Training and Doctrine Command installation which provides essential services to support the U.S. Army War College and other assigned agencies. It has the full range of activities and services found on military posts around the country. The garrison staff ensures the highest quality of life is maintained for residents and visitors to Carlisle Barracks.

Carlisle Barracks is committed to operating and maintaining the finest installation in the U.S. Army. On its over 400 acres, visitors will find 104 historical buildings, with 22 listed in the National Register, and several archaeological sites. While protecting the environment and its historical preservation, Carlisle Barracks provides the highest quality services, facilities and support to our extended military community.

Carlisle Barracks is located approximately 18 miles west of Harrisburg, on US-11 and I-81. Main gate is on Ashburn Drive, 2 miles off exit 16 of I-76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike). Home of the U.S. Army War College, the Army Military History Institute, and the Center for Strategic Leadership.

The major command is TRADOC.

The mission of Carlisle Barracks is to successfully prepare selected military, civilian, and international leaders to assume strategic responsibilities in military and national security organizations; to educate students about the employment of the U.S. Army, as part of a unified, joint, or multinational force in support of the national military strategy; to research operational and strategic issues; and to conduct outreach programs that benefit the USAWC, the U.S. Army and the nation.

History of Carlisle Barracks:

Carlisle Barracks formerly the Carlisle Indian School where Jim Thorpe ("The Greatest Athlete of the Half Century" 1900-1950) went to school. Carlisle Barracks is the second oldest Army post in the United States. It houses the Army War College, the senior educational program of the U.S. Army and the Center for Strategic Leadership. Since 1757, it also has been a Colonial munitions post, a prisoner of war camp for Hessian soldiers during the American Revolution and a cavalry station before the Civil War. The U.S. Army Military History Institute and the General Omar N. Bradley Museum are also located here.
