History Watevliet Arsenal, known as "America's Cannon Factory" is an Army owned and operated manufacturing facility located in New York, just outside Albany. Constructed in 1813, the Arsenal has played a vital role in America's defense throughout its long history producing large bore cannon and a wide variety of other products for military needs. The billion dollar Arsenal manufacturing complex is situated on a 42 acre site and spans 72 buildings with 1.2 milion square feet of manufacturing space. It is also home to the Army's Benet Laboratories, whose mission includes the development of Arsenal products and technology.Watervliet Arsenal is under the command of The Us Army Munitions and Chemical Command. Administrative and logistical support is provided and received in accordance with agreements negotiated between the arsenal, it's tenants and other government services/activities.
Perhaps the most publicized contribution of the arsenal was the "Bunker Buster", the GBU-28 Hard Target Penetrator. The casings for these 5,000-pounders were made at the arsenal in 23 days. In fact, it was little more than one month from the first telephone call to deplotment at Saddam's most "invincible" command bunkers. The next day, the war was over
