22D AIR REFUELING WING
The 22d Air Refueling Wing (ARW) is McConnell's host unit. The wing is a part of the 15th Air Force headquartered at Travis AFB, CA, one of two numbered Air Forces within the Air Mobility Command, headquartered at Scott AFB, IL. The 22d ARW's mission is to develop and maintain the capability to conduct air refueling operations supporting command objectives in any part of the world, in any condition or climate. This role helps carry out AMC's commitment to world peace through readiness and the deterrence of armed aggression. This commitment also includes support for the DOD in many contingency situations, from strategic force projection and strategic force mobility, to humanitarian assistance. Assigned as host unit at McConnell in January 1994, the 22d Air Refueling Wing brought with it a diverse history, a venerable lineage and even a tie to Kansas region which made its new role as the cornerstone in the Wichita-Air Force relationship a natural one.
22D OPERATIONS GROUP
The 22d Operations Group directs the wing's KC-135R Stratotanker refueling and airlift operation in support of AMC, US Transportation Command, Air Force, DOD, and NATO operations anywhere in the world. With its 344th, 349th, 350th, and 384th Air Refueling Squadrons, the group supervises operations in support of strategic force projection and mobility, tactical air operations, and humanitarian assistance efforts.
The 22D LOGISTIC GROUP
The 22d Logistic Group is the largest group on base and the primary for a broad range of logistical support to all organizations at McConnell AFB. It includes components repair and equipment maintenance for the assigned KC-135 fleet. The group also provides training for all aircraft maintenance technicians assigned to the 22d Air Refueling Wing and ensures the quality of all maintenance performed on the tankers at McConnell.
The 22d Contracting Squadron provides local purchase contracting support for wing and associate units assigned to McConnell. Contracts include supplies, equipment, services, and building construction are awarded to commercial firms to satisfy customer requirements.
The 22d Aircraft Generation Squadron provides crew chiefs for the KC-135 stratotankers and is responsible for the flightline maintenance required to launch and recover sorties supporting air refueling operations, both at home and on the road at deployed locations around the globe.
The 22d Logistic Support Squadron serves as the maintenance focal point for facility management, aircraft maintenance training, aircraft engine management and financial guidance in support of aircraft assigned to the base.
The 22d Supply Squadron processes, requisitions, stores, and delivers supplies and equipment for the base community.
The 22d Transportation Squadron provides all surface transportation supporting the McConnell community. This includes management, operation, and maintenance of more then 550 vehicles.
The 22d Maintenance Squadron provides on-and-off equipment maintenance for the assigned KC-135 aircraft.
22D SUPPORT GROUP
The 22d Support Group provides all the services needed by the wing's 3,500 military members and civilian employees to effectively accomplish its worldwide air refueling and airlift mission, quality of life and installation support for the entire McConnel Community.
The 22d Civil Engineer Squadron is McConnell's city manager. This unit is responsible for all the real property and equipment installed at McConnell.
The 22d Communications Squadron provides communications, computer support and deployable communications services to guarantee the 24 hour-a-day connectivity that the the wing needs to meet its worldwide mission.
The 22d Services Squadron operates and maintains the numerous "quality of life" assets at McConnell by providing a variety of social, recreational, and family services.
The 22d Mission Support Squadron provides personnel, administrative and educational support to over 3,000 bluesuiters, 11 associate units, and over 6,800 retired military members.
The 22d Security Police Squadron protects the critical mission facilities, McConnell families, and everything in between.
22D MEDICAL GROUP
The 22d Medical Group ensures the medical readiness of the 22d Air Refueling Wing to accomplish its ongoing worldwide air refueling and airlift operation. The group conducts its mission through four squadrons: The 22d Aerospace Medicine Squadron, 22d Dental Squadron, 22d Medical Operations Squadron and 22d Medical Support Squadron. Through these squadrons, the medical group offers a variety of Primary Care services to its patients population, health, optometry, immunization, flight medicine, gynecology and dental services.
22D AIR REFUELING WING STAFF
Several agencies provide support directly to the host wing commander, as well as to the entire base population. These small, but specialized offices include the chaplain, command and control division, historian, judge advocate, public affairs, wing safety division, Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty compliance division, and comptroller.
ASSOCIATE UNITS
The 184th BW, part of the Kansas Air National Guard headquartered in Topeka Kansas, is located on the west side of the base. It's the only Air National Guard unit with a B-1 heavy bomber mission and operates a fleet of 10 B-1s.
The AF Audit Agency, Det 246, provides professional, independent and objective reviews of existing procedures and controls for all Air Force activities at McConnell and Vance AFB, Okla.
Det 8 provides system, general and familiarization, training for technicians and personnel on KC-135R systems and associated equipment.
The 931st Air Refueling Group (Reserve Associate) is the first KC-135 "stratotanker" associate unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. The mission is to provide mission ready Reservist to fly, maintain, and support global reach for America, therefore they sustain the Air Mobility Command's air refueling and airlift requirements at home and abroad during times of peace and war.
Office of Special Investigation, Det 321, provides specialized criminal, fraud and counterintelligence investigative services to the host wing. USAF CAP Liaison--The Civil Air Patrol liaison office maintains constant cooperation and assistance between the Air Force and the Civil Air Patrol's Kansas Wing.
OTHER UNITS
Other McConnell associate units include the American Red Cross, Defense Investigative Service, Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office, Defense Commissary Agency, Army Air Force Exchange Service, and the 3904th Management Engineering Squadron, Det 11.
