The primary purpose of U.S. Naval Air Station Sigonella is to provide consolidated operational, command and control, administrative, logistical and advanced logistical support to U.S. and other NATO forces. NAS Sigonella is the major support element for U.S. SIXTH Fleet Mediterranean. It is the strategic center of the Mediterranean. Recent political events in the strategic center of the Mediterranean and Near East have greatly increased operational requirements and there has been emergent mission tasking.
NAS Sigonella supports a rotational VP squadron, an HC squadron, C-2, C-9, and C-130 detachments, shore-based fleet aircraft, transient NATO aircraft and U.S. Air Force transient aircraft. The Augusta Bay Port Facility provides fuel, and supplies to SIXTH Fleet combat and logistics support ships. The Telecommunications Facility and Pachino Target Range also provide support to the fleet. Additionally, this station is the routing point for trainsient fleet personnel and fleet cargo movements though out Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia. There are currently about 7,200 military and civilian personnel, including family members.
NAS Sigonella is actually divided into two bases, NAS I and NAS II. Most operational work is conducted at NAS II. The runway, air terminal, operations and most tenant commands are located here. Once a scarcely populated area, a construction boom made NAS II the center of base operations by the late 1970's. About a 10-minute drive north of NAS II is NAS I. This was the original U.S. Naval Base, but as more and more departments migrated to NAS II, NAS I became known as the personnel support facility. NAS I is home to the major shopping facilities - DECA Commissary, Navy Exchange Retail Store (NEX) and Mini Mall, Stephen Decatur School, Navy Family Service Center and the new U.S. Naval Hospital.
NAS Sigonella is located in eastern Sicily . The island of Sicily measures 160 miles in length and varies in width from 30 miles at its western end to about 110 in the east. It is separated from the mainland by the narrow "Straits of Messina" (less than two nautical miles wide). It is the largest island in the Mediterrenean.
Sicily has a lot to offer in its 10,000 square miles. You can hike up Mt. Etna's active crater in the summer and ski down Mt Etnas snowy slopes in the winter. You can sunbath on the island's beaches, or explore its beautiful underwater world by scuba diving. Plays and operas are often performed outdoors during the summer in the ruins of many of the island's magnificent, ancient Greek theaters.
Whatever your interests, you are in the right place.
Welcome to Sigonella and Welcome to Sicily.
