Greetings!
Congratulations on your assignment to Camp Darby and the Livorno Military Community. We are situated in the Tuscany region of Italy, an area that is rich in both history and culture. Nearby is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, as well as the beach resort town of Tirrenia, which forms the southern reaches of the Italian Riviera. Though a small military community near Livorno of only about 2,200 people, we have most facilities typical of a CONUS based installation - just a bit smaller in size. Some key points to remember as you prepare to join us are:
If you have special educational or medical needs, please let your personnel manager and your sponsor know as soon as possible. Our medical and educational facilities are somewhat limited, so a special situation can be challenging.
Italy, like other countries in Europe, operates on a 220-volt electrical system. Transformers or dual voltage appliances are a must and can be purchased locally.
Camp Darby has no on-post housing other than barracks/dormitories for single soldiers and airmen. Government and private leased units are available in the local community and the housing office is set up to help find available accommodations. Houses and apartments in Italy are often much smaller than those in America. Government furniture and appliances are available, including but not limited to washers, dryers, refrigerators, wardrobes, and beds. Work with you sponsor to determine what you really need to bring with you. Anything you bring will need to fit into your quarters because there is no other government storage in Italy.
Automobile fuel is rationed according to the engine size of your vehicle. The ration is usually 300-400 liters (75-100 gallons) per family per month regardless of how many cars you own and/or operate. Unleaded fuel is readily available. Locally, there is a limited used car market that may offer you an alternative to shipping a car.
We look forward to your arrival in Italy and stand ready to assist you in your relocation. Camp Darby is not only a great place to visit (with over 80,000 tourists annually); it is also a great place to live. We have a wonderful combination of soldiers, airmen, families, and civilians. Camp Darby is blessed with a small town atmosphere, yet close to the larger cities of Pisa, Livorno, and Florence. Please stay in close contact with your sponsor to ensure that your transition to Italy is smooth and painless.
I look forward to meeting you upon your arrival.
Sincerely,
Commanding Officer

HISTORY:
In June of 1951, the United States and Italy concluded negotiations to establish a line of communication and supply through Italy, in support of troops in Austria. Under the agreement, Italy provided the land and the United States began construction of a military post, a general depot and a port which were to be the basic facilities for the logistical command. The military complex, located between Pisa and Livorno, was formally dedicated on 15 November 1952. It was named Camp Darby in memory of Brigadier General William O. Darby, Assistant Division Commander of the 10TH Mountain Division, who was killed in action on 30 April 1945 in Trento, Italy. Since its establishment, Camp Darby has served successively for the 7656th Logistical Command, the 7617th US Forces Austria Support Command, USA Logistical Command, 8th Support Group, and currently the 22D Area Support Group.
